Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, but it’s how we respond to those challenges that defines us. On a recent episode of Divine Time, I had the privilege of speaking with Kenny Sexton, an educator, trainer, and ministry coach whose journey of survival and transformation is nothing short of inspiring.
A Wake-Up Call
Kenny’s life took a dramatic turn when he found himself on the floor, unable to move properly, and experiencing something he had never felt before. In that moment, an inner voice urged him to get up and seek help. What followed was a harrowing experience—his wife’s quick thinking and a long wait for medical assistance ultimately led to the shocking revelation: he had suffered a stroke equivalent to a Widowmaker heart attack.
The doctor’s words struck deep: “If you had been asleep, chances are you wouldn’t be here today.” That realization changed everything for Kenny. The fragility of life had never been clearer, and he knew he had been given a second chance.
Finding Purpose in the Dash
Reflecting on his near-death experience, Kenny was drawn to Psalm 90:12: “Lord, teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” This scripture became his guiding light, leading him to develop a powerful philosophy on time and intentional living. He created the acronym T.I.M.E., which serves as a daily reminder of how to live life with purpose:
- T – Teach Me: Every day is a lesson in faith, family, finances, work, and health. Life is a constant journey of learning and growth.
- I – Invest in Your Health: We often take our well-being for granted until it’s compromised. Investing in good nutrition, exercise, and self-care is crucial for a fulfilling life.
- M – Margin for Meaningful Relationships: In the fast pace of life, we forget to create space for deep connections. True fulfillment comes from the relationships we build and nurture.
- E – Exchange the Temporary for the Eternal: Challenges are temporary, but our impact and legacy last beyond our lifetime. By shifting focus from immediate struggles to eternal significance, we can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
A Mindset of Resilience
Kenny’s road to recovery wasn’t easy. He faced the frustration of brain fog, difficulty communicating, and the daunting process of relearning basic functions. However, his determination to embrace every step of the journey kept him moving forward.
Instead of dwelling on what was lost, he chose to focus on what remained. His message is simple but powerful: If you have a pulse, you have a purpose. He encourages everyone to stop living passively and start pursuing their calling with intention.
Lessons in Gratitude
As our conversation wrapped up, I asked Kenny what he was most grateful for. His answer? The love of his family, the second chance he’s been given, and the opportunity to help others through his story.
His journey is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and a positive mindset. We all have a choice in how we respond to life’s challenges. Will we let them define us, or will we rise above them and turn them into opportunities for growth?
Final Thoughts
Kenny Sexton’s story is a reminder that every day is a gift. We may not know how much time we have, but we can choose to live with purpose, invest in what truly matters, and make a lasting impact.
So, ask yourself: How are you spending your dash? Are you making time for what truly matters? If not, maybe it’s time to take a step back and realign with your purpose.
