Introduction
Spirituality is a deeply personal journey, one that often involves questioning, exploring, and sometimes even unlearning the beliefs and practices we were raised with. For many who grew up in the Baptist tradition like me, the journey toward a broader, more inclusive spirituality can be both liberating and challenging. This blog post explores the process of seeking spirituality while grappling with the need to move beyond the confines of Baptist Christianity.
The Foundation of Baptist Christianity
Baptist Christianity, with its emphasis on personal salvation, biblical literalism, and a structured approach to faith, provides a strong foundation for many. The community, the rituals, and the clear moral guidelines can offer a sense of security and belonging. However, for some, this structure can also feel restrictive, leaving little room for personal interpretation or spiritual exploration. I realized that when I would talk to many Christians about passages in the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, the meaning was not always the same. When reading the bible, we do not need to keep our minds closed and think each story is being accurate to the detail. Reading the bible is like listening to an old Shakespeare poem. The way that words are spoken to describe the emotions and paint a picture. A meaning hidden in the flow of beautiful words, a true riddle.
The Catalyst for Change
The journey toward a broader spirituality often begins with a catalyst—a moment of doubt, a personal crisis, or an encounter with a different perspective. For many, this catalyst leads to a profound questioning of the beliefs they were taught. Questions like, “Is the Bible the only source of truth?” or “Is there only one path to salvation?” can open the door to a more expansive spiritual quest. I have been in many situations to where my life was in danger and I have been through a lot in my life thus far too. While talking to people on the podcast in the segment of speak your truth many disclose things that they have gone through (usually life changing) and then they start to question many aspects of what they were taught in life thus far. Resulting in looking within and focusing on seeing things for what they truly are rather than what they were indoctrinated to believe. The hardest part is to unlearn everything that you have learned. As you get older I imagine you will learn more. Making it harder to unlearn all the things that you swore and abide by until that moment.
The Struggle to Unlearn
Unlearning deeply ingrained beliefs is no easy task. It requires confronting the fear of judgment, the guilt of straying from the “right path,” and the discomfort of uncertainty. For those raised in the Baptist tradition, this can be particularly challenging. The fear of eternal damnation, the pressure to conform, and the sense of betrayal can weigh heavily on the heart and mind. To wonder if the thoughts you have is coming from a demon or is it a “download”, are you practicing witchcraft while giving thanks to yourself, those who came before you, and the archangels? But then you start to remember that Jesus spoke to the most high when he prayed and the lord told him that he will be sacrificed for the sins of humanity so why can’t he be speaking to me too? You remember that Jesus says that god is within so why should I not thank myself and those before me for looking over me. My angels!
Embracing a Broader Spirituality
As the process of unlearning begins, so does the journey toward a more inclusive spirituality. This often involves exploring other religious traditions, engaging with spiritual practices like meditation or yoga, and seeking out communities that embrace diversity and open-mindedness. It’s about finding what resonates with your soul, rather than adhering to a prescribed set of beliefs. One thing that I have learned is that religion has text that are not meant to be religious, rather used as something to abide by to find your true self. Greed of man turned it into a religion because they wanted a system that elevates key people but leaves others fighting for control. The best way to control is by first dividing the masses. Then confuse them with distractions and erase history and rewrite it to fit the narrative and end goal that has been drawn out. Look around and notice anything with religion? How do we have so many “religions” that individually speak of peace and living righteous yet cause so much destruction when they meet up? Religion is the divide of man, the text is the way to find the truth.
Finding Balance
One of the key challenges in this journey is finding a balance between honoring the positive aspects of your Baptist upbringing and embracing new spiritual perspectives. It’s important to acknowledge the values and lessons that have shaped you, while also allowing yourself the freedom to grow and evolve.
The Role of Community
Community plays a crucial role in any spiritual journey. Finding a supportive community that encourages exploration and respects your individual path can make all the difference. Whether it’s a spiritual group, a book club, or an online forum, connecting with like-minded individuals can provide the encouragement and validation you need. I must say, my walk in spirituality has opened my eyes to see things differently in all aspects. I feel like a kid again by the way i look at life. To think that many of the cartoons I watched growing up may have had hidden meanings in them. With that talking to like minded people can open your mind up to many more point of views that you may not have thought about. Allowing you to expand your conscious and broaden your capabilities of what you can imagine. Community in life is lacking and I am starting to believe that many people are afraid to have friends. Without community we are starving our minds of the fruit of knowledge. We are limiting our spectrum of thought and reducing our network of knowledge. So work on loving, trusting, and building your confidence in yourself to broaden your community. We all are 1 living many lives all at once.
The Power of Self-Compassion
Finally, it’s essential to practice self-compassion throughout this journey. Let go of the need for perfection and allow yourself to make mistakes. Understand that spirituality is not a destination, but a continuous process of growth and discovery. Be kind to yourself as you navigate the complexities of unlearning and relearning.
Conclusion
Seeking spirituality while battling to forget the ways of Baptist Christianity is a courageous and transformative journey. It’s about finding your own truth, embracing the unknown, and allowing yourself the freedom to explore the vast landscape of spiritual possibilities. Remember, the path to spirituality is as unique as you are, and there is no right or wrong way to walk it. Trust in your journey, and know that you are not alone.
