There is a painful truth about healing that nobody talks about enough:
You cannot heal and remain liked by everyone who benefited from the version of you that was hurting. Read that again. “You cannot heal and remain liked by everyone who benefited from the version of you that was hurting.” Sometimes your healing is going to disappoint people. Sometimes your boundaries are going to offend people. Sometimes your silence is going to frustrate people. And sometimes the people who hurt you are going to decide they don’t like you anymore because you finally stopped allowing them access to the version of you they could manipulate, disrespect, use, or take for granted.
And that’s okay, because healing isn’t about becoming more comfortable for everyone else.
Healing is about becoming whole for yourself.
The Version of You They Loved May Have Been the Version They Could Control
Think about the version of yourself that existed before you started healing. Maybe you apologized for everything, constantly explained yourself, tolerated disrespect because you didn’t want conflict, gave people chance after chance. Or maybe you were always available. Maybe you ignored your intuition because you didn’t want to believe someone you loved could hurt you. Maybe you kept forgiving people without requiring accountability. Maybe you stayed quiet just to keep the peace and because you behaved that way, certain people became comfortable with you.
They knew what buttons to push. They knew you would eventually forgive them. They knew you would come back. They knew you would make excuses for them. They knew you would put your feelings aside to protect theirs. Then you started healing! Now suddenly… you started saying no. You started asking questions for clarity. You started recognizing patterns and trusting your memory. You stopped chasing people for chasing shows they are moving away from you. You stopped explaining your boundaries and instead enforced them. You stopped accepting disrespect just because you loved someone. You started choosing peace over proving your point. Then suddenly, somebody doesn’t like you anymore. Why? Because your healing interrupted their access to you.
Healing Will Expose Relationships That Were Built Around Your Lack of Boundaries
Not every relationship survives your healing. That’s one of the hardest lessons to accept. Sometimes the relationship wasn’t built on mutual respect. Sometimes it was built on your tolerance and it worked because you tolerated what should have been addressed. It worked because you kept forgiving without seeing change, because you were afraid of losing them. It worked because you were more concerned with being liked than being respected. However, once you heal, you start asking a different question.
Instead of: “How do I keep them happy?” You start asking: “Is this relationship healthy for me?” That’s a completely different mindset and not everyone is going to appreciate the difference.
You Don’t Need the Person Who Hurt You to Approve of Your Healing
One of the traps people fall into is believing they need closure from the person who caused the wound. You may never get the apology, the explanation, or the accountability. You may never hear: “I was wrong.” And if you make your healing dependent on receiving those things, you give the person who hurt you control over whether you can move forward. Take your power back.
Sometimes closure is recognizing: “What happened to me was real, it hurt me, and I don’t have to keep participating in it.” That’s closure. I had to step up and cut ties with an ex who wanted me to come over so we could talk about what happened. I told her no and that I do not feel comfortable being around her after she raped me while on her period after I made it very clear in the beginning that I do not do blood play…
You Can Forgive Someone and Still Remove Their Access
Forgiveness does not mean unlimited access. You can forgive someone and still have boundaries. You can love someone and still create distance. You can wish someone well and still understand that they aren’t healthy for you. You can release resentment without reopening the door. Healing doesn’t require you to hate anyone. Sometimes healing simply means: “I don’t hate you. I just don’t trust you with me anymore.” And that’s a boundary.
Stop Measuring Your Healing by Other People’s Comfort
If every boundary you establish requires someone else’s approval, you’re not fully free yet. Your healing may make people uncomfortable and that is fine. That shows who enjoyed the access they had to you not you for you. So let them be uncomfortable. Your growth may make people question you. That is fine, after all your healing is not for them so let them question you.
Your transformation may make people call you selfish. Let them call you selfish. People who benefited from your lack of boundaries may interpret your boundaries as rejection. But boundaries aren’t punishment, only the guilty will feel like your boundaries are a punishment to them. All while in reality your boundaries are just protection for you. And protecting yourself doesn’t make you cruel. It makes you responsible for your own well-being.
The Right People Won’t Require You to Stay Broken So They Can Feel Comfortable
Healthy people don’t need you to remain wounded so they can maintain access to you. Healthy people can hear your boundaries, they can accept accountability, they can acknowledge when they’ve hurt you. Healthy people don’t demand that you return to the version of yourself that tolerated everything. The people meant to remain in your life will learn how to meet the healed version of you. They may not understand every change immediately. But they will respect it. And if they can’t? That should tell you something and make you ask the question on if this person should remain in your life.
Your Healing May Cost You Relationships
Yes, that’s a painful thought and an even worse reality. Nobody wants to lose people. But sometimes losing a relationship is part of losing the version of yourself that kept that relationship alive. Stop giving CPR to dead relationships! You may have to grieve people you still love. You may have to accept that history doesn’t equal compatibility. You may have to stop confusing familiarity with safety. You may have to stop calling something “loyalty” when it’s actually self-abandonment. Yes, I know. That’s difficult, but necessary. Because your life cannot be built around protecting relationships that continuously destroy your peace.
Here’s Your Reminder Today
You don’t have to stay liked by everyone. You don’t have to convince everyone that your boundaries are reasonable. You don’t have to prove that your pain was legitimate. Hell you don’t have to get an apology before you move forward. You don’t have to remain accessible to people simply because you have history with them. And you absolutely don’t have to become smaller AGAIN because someone preferred the wounded version of you.
Heal anyway. Grow anyway. Set the boundary anyway. Walk away when necessary. Choose yourself without becoming bitter. Forgive without forgetting the lesson. Love without abandoning yourself. And understand this: The people who genuinely love you may have to adjust to the healed version of you. The people who only loved your availability, your silence, your compliance, or your lack of boundaries may disappear. Let them. Because sometimes the loss isn’t evidence that you failed. Sometimes the loss is evidence that you finally changed.
Your Divine Time Challenge
Today, ask yourself: “Who am I afraid will dislike me if I fully honor my healing?” Then ask: “What am I still tolerating because I’m afraid of losing their approval?” Whatever comes up, be honest with yourself and I recommend writing it down to keep track of your thoughts. You don’t have to confront anyone today. You don’t have to make a dramatic announcement. But you do need to stop betraying yourself just to keep someone else comfortable. Your healing is yours. Your peace is yours. Your boundaries are yours.
And your next chapter does not require permission from the people who benefited from your previous one. Relax your mind, it’s all in Divine Time. Keep growing. Keep healing. Keep protecting your peace.
